Automatic Gates: What to Know

  • Power. Most gate motors need mains power. Any new power point or hard-wired connection must be done by a licensed electrician, and many fencers work with one. Solar kits suit long rural driveways.
  • Safety. Automatic gates are heavy and can trap or injure people, children and pets. Ask for safety beams or sensors that stop or reverse the gate, and make sure manual release is easy to reach.
  • The gate itself. A motor won't fix a gate that drags or sags. The gate needs to swing or roll freely first, which is why it's best to plan automation with the gate.
  • Servicing. Like a garage door, a motor needs the odd service. Ask about the warranty and who services it.
